USAID partner Marcio Santilli was recently named as one of Time Magazine’s “Heroes of the Environment 2009”, in recognition for his work promoting “compensated reduction” of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation.
Santilli’s visionary idea “compensates” nations that reduce their rate of deforestation below their historical average through emission allowances that can be traded on the carbon market. The compensation would come after 2012 and only when reductions are confirmed using satellite imagery.
Mr. Santilli, of Instituto Socioambiental is the coordinator of the Xingu Headwaters Campaign, one of the forest restoration and conservation activities conducted as part of the USAID-funded “Responsible Sourcing” partnership.
