GVF List Brazilian Companies with Highest Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Accounting for greenhouse gas emissions can help prepare the companies to move into the carbon market

SÃO PAULO, October 14, 2009 - The first report of the Brazilian Greenhouses Gas Protocol (GHG) which measures greenhouse gas emission from 27 major Brazilian companies, coordinated by USAID partner Getúlio Vargas Foundation (GVF), shows that in 2008, this group of companies was responsible for the emission of 85.2 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent.
This amount represents 8.5% of the total Brazilian emissions during the period, not considering deforestation and land use.
According to the report, Petrobras had the highest emissions last year: 51 million tons of CO2, 59% of the total.
The application of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in Brazil was supported by USAID/W, through World Resources Institute in partnership with the Getúlio Vargas Fundation’s Center for Sustainability Studies.
According to the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, accounting for greenhouse gas emissions can help prepare the companies to move into the carbon market and to implement energy efficiency projects.
