High Expectations for Triangular US-Brazil-Mozambique Cooperation in Health

BRASÍLIA, October 21, 2009 - On October 14, the Brazilian Ministry of Health hosted the First Extended Meeting of the International Cooperation in Health Technical Working Group, which includes the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, USAID, UN Specialized Agencies, GTZ, JICA and DFID, among others.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss triangular cooperation in health with multilateral and bilateral organizations, focusing mainly on South America and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.
Promising areas for triangular cooperation are HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis and Sickle Cell Disease, particularly for structural actions such as the establishment of regional training centers and logistic systems, in addition to capacity building of health professionals through higher education programs, and increased production of pharmaceuticals for treatment of these diseases.
USAID’s support to a Brazil-Sao Tome and Principe joint program on Malaria Control was highlighted as a best practice. The Government of Brazil also stressed that they have high expectations for the triangular U.S.-Brazil-Mozambique cooperation in HIV/AIDS, which is in the final stages of negotiation.
